Establishing Norms

Building norms creates strong teams! Norms are the ground rules for how team members will communicate and interact with each other. Creating norms together, as a team, requires full member participation and agreement around acceptable actions and behaviours to strengthen team functioning and create conditions to promote higher team performance. During this workshop, teams will be introduced to the concept of building team norms and begin to uncover shared mutual expectations that reflect how the team will work together. Teams will also be introduced to a plan to implement these norms in the workplace. Once developed, the plan should guide behaviours and actions of the team while ensuring norms are made explicit and revised as needed.

At the end of the workshop you will be able to:

  • Identify the importance of norms
  • Start the process of building norms in your team
  • Develop and implement a plan for fostering team norms
